Forer Effect

What is Forer Effect?

The Forer effect is the observation that individuals will give high accuracy ratings to descriptions of their personality that supposedly are tailored specifically for them, but are in fact vague and general enough to apply to a wide range of people. This effect can provide a partial explanation for the widespread acceptance of some beliefs and practices, such as astrology, fortune telling, and some types of personality tests.

Let me give you a simple example

I bet..

You try to show your good image to others, but sometimes you discriminate yourself
You have some weaknesses, but you have some countermesures prepared for them
You have potential strengh which you do not recognise
You might look bright outside but not always inside
You are open to changes however not too much
Some of your dreams(ambitions) are practical
Sometimes you think deeply if you have made a right decision
One of your aims in life is happiness

(from Dr.Frost, Naver WebToon)

They are VERY obvious and general facts for most of the people
HOWEVER, if these results are shown after you take a simple tests (like simple psychology tests in websites)
you tend to believe you got the unique results and unconciously,
you try to squeeze and apply the results in your past…
this is Foroer(aka Barnum) Effect
